The Sutton and District Medical Society was founded in 1919 by Dr Arthur Cressy, who was a General Practitioner (GP) at Wallington Green.  His purpose in creating the Society was to foster a spirit of mutual help between the GPs in the area of Surrey comprising Wallington, Carshalton, Sutton and Cheam.  At the inception of the National Health Service in 1948 many new consultants were appointed in the area and were invited to join the Society. In 2018 the Merton Medical Society merged with Sutton & District Medical Society, hence no name change.

Until a few years ago, all lectures were strictly medical in nature but, with the widespread provision of Continuing Medical Education (CME/CPD) in the local Postgraduate Centres, a broader range of topics of general interest are now covered.   Partners, friends and young relatives interested in medical careers are welcomed as guests to the evening meetings which provide a most valuable local professional network for colleagues and their families.

The standard monthly meetings from October to March are held at Banstead Downs Golf Club, Burdon Lane, Cheam, Sutton, Surrey SM2 7DD and consist of a reception at 7.15 pm, followed by dinner at 7.45 pm, then a lecture at about 9 pm, with time for discussion.  Members unable to get to the reception and dinner are welcome to attend the lectures. The current charge for attending the monthly receptions plus dinners is £ 35.00 (no charge for the lectures). Each year the Society also holds a a formal Black-Tie Dinner in May.

Medical Practitioners living or working in the area are welcome to join. The current subscription is £30 per annum. Application forms can be obtained from the Honorary Secretary: s.d.m.society@gmail.com.
